How to Use GPT-4
The world of artificial intelligence continues to progress at an ever-faster pace.
On March 14, OpenAI released the new version of its Generative Pre-trained Transformer: GPT-4!
In this comprehensive guide, we will cover:
- How to use GPT-4 in Chat GPT?
- How to access GPT-4 for free?
- How to use the playground and OpenAI’s API?
Let’s discover how to use GPT-4 without further delay!
Accessing GPT-4 on ChatGPT
To use the GPT-4 model on ChatGPT, you will need to pay to become a ChatGPT Plus user, which costs $20 per month. Once you have a Plus account, you can select the GPT-4 model on the Chat page of ChatGPT.
🤷♂️ Don’t know how to use Chat GPT? I explain how to create your account, log in, and ask your first questions to ChatGPT in this article.
Getting a ChatGPT Plus Account
To upgrade your ChatGPT account to a ChatGPT Plus account, go to ChatGPT and click on “Upgrade to Plus” at the bottom left of the page. You can then have a ChatGPT Plus account for just under $20 per month, and you will have additional benefits.
The advantages of having ChatGPT Plus compared to a basic ChatGPT account are:
- Priority access when ChatGPT is heavily used or even inaccessible
- Faster response time for your conversations with artificial intelligence
- Priority access to new ChatGPT features (such as the GPT-4 model in ChatGPT)
Getting GPT-4 for Free
You can access GPT-4 for free by using Bing on the Microsoft Edge browser. Microsoft has integrated the latest GPT-4 model into its Bing search engine, and you can have free access to GPT-4 by signing up on the Microsoft website.
Microsoft has heavily invested (10 billion dollars) in OpenAI. The American company has special access to OpenAI products such as ChatGPT and GPT-4.
The new Bing with the chatbot that has access to GPT-4 is only available through Microsoft Edge, Microsoft’s web browser.
Here are the steps to follow:
1. Sign up on the Bing website to access GPT-4
Microsoft initially opened a waiting list to access GPT-4 through their Bing search engine. Today, you can access GPT-4 by visiting the official Bing website.
To sign up, follow the link below and log in with your Microsoft account (or create one if you don’t have one yet).

2. Download the Microsoft Edge browser
Go to the Microsoft website to download the Microsoft Edge browser.
Choose your operating system and download the Edge installer for your machine.
Microsoft Edge is available for:
- Windows 11 and Windows 10
- macOS (Intel and Apple Silicon processors)
- iOS on the Apple App Store
- Android on the Google Play Store
3. Install the Microsoft Edge browser
Follow the installation steps. Once the installation is complete, you will need to log in with the Microsoft account with which you signed up for the waiting list.
4. Start chatting with GPT-4
Finally, you can start chatting with GPT-4 by clicking the “Chat now” button to begin using OpenAI’s artificial intelligence.
You can also access GPT-4 from Bing by clicking on the “Conversation” tab in the top left menu of the search engine.

Using the OpenAI Playground with GPT-4
ChatGPT users with ChatGPT Plus can access the GPT-4 model in OpenAI’s playground.
Once on this page, select the “Chat” value for the playground mode.
Then you can choose your model:
- GPT-3.5-turbo corresponds to what you have by default on the ChatGPT site
- GPT-4 corresponds to the new OpenAI model
Additionally, you can control the playground parameters:
- Temperature from 0 to 1: controls the diversity of responses. A temperature close to 0 will give strict and coherent responses, while 1 will give varied responses. TL;DR: A low temperature tends toward more order, a high temperature tends toward more chaos.
- Maximum length from 1 to 2048: represents the maximum number of words in your response. You can decrease this parameter if you want a precise word limit.
- Top P from 0 to 1: increases the creativity of responses. The lower the “Top P” value, the more the words used will be in a high probability sample. TL;DR: A low Top P tends toward more order, a high Top P tends toward more chaos.
- Frequency penalty from 0 to 2: penalizes repetition. The higher the frequency penalty value, the fewer repeated words there will be. TL;DR: 0 = more repetition of the same words, 2 = less repetition.
- Presence penalty from 0 to 2: penalizes the use of words you have used in the prompt. The higher the presence penalty value, the more original the responses are. TL;DR: A low presence penalty tends toward more order, a high presence penalty tends toward more chaos.
Accessing DALL·E 3 in ChatGPT 4
DALL·E 3, the latest version of the image generator by OpenAI’s artificial intelligence, is now available directly in ChatGPT. The only requirement to access DALL·E 3 in ChatGPT-4 is to have a ChatGPT Plus (or Enterprise) account.
To generate an image with ChatGPT, you need to send it a prompt requesting the creation of an image, and ChatGPT will display the result of your request directly in the conversation, as on MidJourney.
What are the differences between GPT-4 and ChatGPT?
GPT-4 is an enhanced version of GPT-3.5. Overall, GPT-4 provides better responses to complex questions and is more creative than GPT-3.5. For simple or factual questions, GPT-3.5 works very well, but GPT-4 clearly excels in generating interesting and rich content.
Additionally, a future model gpt-4-32k
will allow for a much larger number of tokens (32,768 versus 4096 today). This means that prompts and responses can be 8 times longer.
Furthermore, other features will be gradually added for GPT-4. Some features have already been presented but are not yet available.
👨💻 We also do not have access to the GPT-4 model in the OpenAI API. I will discuss the OpenAI API with GPT-4 further in this article.
In the future, GPT-4 will be able to:
- handle more context (up to 50,000 characters)
- use content from a website link
- answer questions related to an image and charts
These last points were presented in the GPT-4 introduction video by OpenAI, which you can watch below.
You can also find more details on the operation and (future) capabilities of GPT-4 on the official OpenAI website.
How to Use the GPT-4 API?
The GPT-4 API is not yet available to all. However, you can sign up for the waiting list to access the GPT-4 model with OpenAI’s API on the official OpenAI website.
In the meantime, you can already use OpenAI’s API to access the “Chat” mode and the gpt-3.5-turbo
model to get a similar output to what you have on the ChatGPT site. I wrote a tutorial with explanatory video in my article how to use the ChatGPT API?.
